CIRES/CSD Atmospheric Remote Sensing
The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU-Boulder is seeking an associate scientist to support the development of real-time data systems for instrumentation to remotely measure atmospheric dynamics characteristics and trace gas concentrations.
The successful candidate will design and implement user interfaces (and interact with users to improve and modify as needed), document code, and assemble networks for instrument control across multiple operating systems. The candidate must be comfortable working with, installing, diagnosing, and replacing computer hardware in both laboratory and field conditions. As this is a research position, systems are regularly being upgraded and improved.
The candidate should expect to travel up to 6 weeks per year with deployments on research ships, aircraft, and ground-based operations in varied work conditions, which may include remote locations, harsh (outdoor, hot, cold, loud, etc.) environments, and with minimal or no breaks during a deployment. The candidate must have strong teamwork skills as these are essential to our success. The candidate will be relied upon and can expect support from other team members.
The ideal candidate would have a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in engineering or computer science and an understanding of fundamentals of data acquisition, computer interface electronics, and basic signal processing.
Required programming skills include experience with Labview and C. Programming skills in Visual Basic, Matlab, and IDL are desired, as well as experience with Windows and QNX/Linux operating systems. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate skill in project design and version control; real-time instrument control; data acquisition using high speed digitizers and/or counters; and data transfer and storage.
