The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC),, part of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder, serves as a national information and referral center in support of snow and ice research. Our mission is to make fundamental contributions to cryospheric science and excel in managing data and disseminating information in order to advance understanding of the Earth system.

The Software Developer (SD) has significant experience writing software in languages such as Python, Ruby or JavaScript.  This individual is capable of working independently on components or features of larger applications and may take the lead designing and developing mid-sized projects.  The SD applies software lifecycle methodologies and development best practices, and may also be involved in bringing in or defining new practices and processes.  This person is an active participant in architecture and design discussions and can also lead these activities on small to mid-sized projects.  The SD works as part of a larger project team that may include developers, scientists, web designers, tech writers, sys admins and others across NSIDC and may also work independently on some projects or with a scientist. 


* Design, develop, and maintain software applications, tools and infrastructure to support cryospheric science and cryospheric data management. 
* Participate in full lifecycle software development, including planning, design, implementation, integration, testing and support, taking the lead on some projects.  
* Analyze and evaluate tools and methods in order to propose and implement solutions that effectively meet project requirements and address challenges.
* Work with project team members (including project managers and subject matter experts) to translate customer requests into working software, helping to resolve ambiguity in requirements.
* Work with scientists to translate research-grade algorithms into production code. 
* Stay current with relevant technologies, software development practices and scientific research.
* Stay current with expertise in a specific subject area of computer science or physical science. 
* May guide and mentor more junior team members. 
* Present Work at scientific meetings, in science journals, technical reports and web pages. 
* May provide input to grant proposals and statements of work regarding resource estimates, software configurations and hardware requirements. 


* Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering or other physical (Earth) science.
* At least 5 to 8 years of experience developing software tools, algorithms, systems or applications. 
* Experience developing with Python, Ruby or JavaScript and related technologies such as NumPy, SciPy and Pandas for Python; React, Mocha and Chai for JavaScript and Rails, Rake and RubyGems for Ruby;
* Experience designing, architecting and/or refactoring software applications or systems. 
* Experience with BitBucket, GitHub or similar hosted revision control system. 
* Experience consuming and producing web services. 
* Experience working in an OS X/Linux development environment.
* Understands and applies software development lifecycles and methodologies including design, debugging, testing and maintenance.
* Ability to work collaboratively with others as part of a team, incorporating new ideas into group processes, and negotiating reasonable compromises.
* Ability to organize work independently with limited supervision. 
* Expertise in a specific subject area of computer science or physical science.
