The Jimenez group's research centers on the development and application of advanced instrumentation for real-time, quantitative measurements of the size, chemical composition, and morphology of submicron aerosols. We care about atmospheric aerosols for many reasons, including their effect on radiation balance (climate forcing), severe short-term and long-term effects on human health, reduced visibility, and acid deposition ("acid rain"). Most of these effects are not well understood, in good part due to the limitations of the instrumentation available. Advanced instrumentation can be used to make much faster progress in many of these areas. Aerosols are also important for other applications such as nanomaterials fabrication and pharmaceutical drug delivery.


Current Research

Sources, properties, and fate of organic aerosols

Aerosols are small particles suspended inair, with typical lifetimes of one to twoweeks in the atmosphere before theyare returned to Earth’s surface. They have majoreffects on climate forcing, human health,regional visibility, crops, and ecosystems.About half of the mass of the longest-lived(“submicron”) aerosols is composed of organiccompounds—i.e., molecules composed ofchains of carbon atoms with other elementssuch as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.Important sources of these organic aerosols(OA) include anthropogenic pollution, biogeniccompounds; and biomass burning, andgas-to-particle conversion leading to secondaryorganic aerosols (SOA) is a key component ofall sources. The amount, properties, and evolutionof the OA from each of these sources arepoorly characterized, and our group combinesfield, laboratory, and modeling research tobetter constrain them.

Using a new type of chemical analyzercapable of speciated analysis of organic acidsin gases and aerosols simultaneously, weperformed the first field measurements ata pine forest in the Manitou ExperimentalForest near Woodland Park, Colo. Thisallowed us to characterize for the first timetheir bulk gas/particle partitioning, which isa critical control on the amount of propertiesof the aerosol and, thus, on its effects.Figure 1 shows that the partitioning of bulkorganic acids can be predicted when theircomposition (carbon number and oxygencontent) are known. Figure 2 shows thatthis partitioning responds quickly to changesin ambient temperature, and again thesechanges are well-predicted with a theoreticalmodel. These findings run contrary withmuch current literature that concludes,based on laboratory experiments, that partitioningshould favor the particle phase morestrongly and respond far more slowly thanwe observe. Future research will investigatewhether the measured partitioning dependson the sources (i.e., urban areas, deciduousforests, biomass-burning smoke etc.),environment (temperature, humidity), andage of the aerosols.
